While You Wait

What To Do Right Now.

Four situations we get called out to most, and the first things worth doing before anyone arrives. If you're ever unsure whether something is safe, stop and call.

Stop — Safety First

You Can Smell Gas

  1. Don't touch light switches, power points, or anything that could spark — and put out any naked flames or cigarettes.
  2. Open doors and windows to ventilate the space.
  3. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely.
  4. Get everyone outside, and make your calls from outside.

If the smell is strong, or anyone feels dizzy or unwell, call 000 first. You can also ring your gas distributor's 24-hour faults line — the number is on your gas bill. Then call S4P on 0481 513 001 for the licensed gas fitting repair and compliance certificate.

Act Immediately

Burst Pipe Or Major Leak

  1. Shut the water off at the main stop tap — usually beside the water meter near the front boundary. Turn it clockwise.
  2. If it's a hot water line, switch the hot water unit off too (gas valve, or its circuit at the switchboard).
  3. If water is anywhere near power points, lights or the switchboard, kill that circuit at the switchboard — or leave the room and call an electrician.
  4. Lift what you can off the floor, and take photos of the damage before you mop up. Your insurer will want them.

Water off and still leaking, or you can't find the stop tap? Call 0481 513 001 and we'll talk you through it.

Health Risk

Sewage Backing Up Or Overflowing

  1. Stop using water in the property — no toilets, showers, dishwasher or washing machine. Every litre makes it worse.
  2. Keep kids and pets well away from the overflow. Sewage is a genuine health hazard, not just a mess.
  3. Don't tip drain chemicals down it. They rarely shift a real blockage and they make the line dangerous to work on.
  4. If it's overflowing outside at the grate, that grate is doing its job — it's protecting the inside of the house.

We clear it with high-pressure jetting and camera the line afterwards so you know what caused it. More on CCTV drain inspections.

Urgent If Leaking

No Hot Water

  1. Water pooling under the unit, or steam and hissing? Shut it down and treat it as urgent — call rather than investigate.
  2. Gas unit, nothing obviously wrong? Check whether your other gas appliances still work, so we know if it's the unit or the supply.
  3. Electric unit? Check the switchboard, including the off-peak circuit if you're on one.
  4. Check the isolation valve at the unit hasn't been knocked closed — it happens more often than you'd think.

Same-day replacement is available when a unit is beyond repair, and we'll give you a straight answer on repair versus replace. More on hot water systems.

A note on the advice above. It's general guidance for common situations, not a substitute for a licensed plumber or gas fitter looking at your property. If a step feels unsafe, don't do it — get everyone clear and call.

Emergency FAQ

The Questions People Ask At 2am.

Short answers, so you're not reading a wall of text with water coming through the ceiling.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything that's causing damage, is unsafe, or makes the property unusable right now: a burst pipe or uncontrolled leak, the smell of gas, sewage backing up inside or overflowing outside, a hot water unit leaking, or no water at all. If water is near electrical fittings, or you can smell gas, treat it as urgent regardless of the hour.

Where is the water main shut-off tap?

On most Melbourne properties the main stop tap sits next to the water meter near the front boundary — often in a small plastic box at ground level. Turn it clockwise to shut the water off. Worth finding yours before you ever need it, and checking that it actually turns.

Do you charge more for after-hours callouts?

After-hours work is priced differently to a scheduled weekday job. You'll be told what the callout costs on the phone, before anyone is dispatched — no surprise invoices at 2am.

Who's responsible for a blocked sewer — me or the water authority?

You're responsible for the drains on your property; the water authority is responsible for their main sewer. A CCTV inspection shows which side of the boundary the blockage is on. If it turns out to be in the authority's main, we'll tell you, so you can call them rather than pay for work that isn't yours.

How quickly can you get to a Melbourne emergency?

It depends where the van is and what's already on the board. Call and you'll get a real answer on timing straight away rather than an open-ended wait — plus advice on what to do in the meantime.
